The drive from Kochi to Athirappilly was a journey of gradual change. With every kilometer, the city’s hum faded, replaced by the symphony of nature. We watched as the landscape transformed, the concrete giving way to a more and more intense green. It was as if we were entering a different world, one that was wilder and more alive.
The Roar of the Falls: My Visit to Athirappilly
As we got our tickets and walked in, a small, quiet moment greeted us. Near the entrance, a monkey sat peacefully. It wasn’t aggressive at all, just observing. I saw Sabine gently point it out to Sivani, and I think it was her first time seeing one so close. It was a sweet, shared moment of wonder that set a perfect tone for the rest of our visit.
We walked along the path, a mosaic of smooth stones. The air grew cooler as we neared the sound of rushing water. It wasn’t the roar of the main fall yet, but the peaceful gurgle of the stream below. Sabine led Sivani down to the water’s edge, carefully dipping her feet in. I loved watching her make friends with some people from Tamil Nadu, all of them connected by the simple joy of the moment. I found my own spot, sat down on a cool stone, and let my feet sink into the refreshing water. It felt like a small reset button.
Then we started our descent to see the waterfall itself. The path was a beautiful series of stone steps, lined with railings that looked exactly like bamboo but were actually solid cement. As we went down, the sound grew from a gentle murmur to a powerful, all-encompassing roar.
And then I saw it. The sight was absolutely magnificent. I finally understood why so many movies are filmed here. The sheer volume of water cascading down the rocks, surrounded by that deep jungle green, was a perfect natural composition. It was a symphony of sight and sound, a moment where the beauty of nature felt overwhelming. We just stood there for a long time, completely lost in the moment, admiring the raw power and incredible beauty of the waterfall.
