After the profound spiritual and historical journey through Sri Lanka, especially the high drama of scaling Sigiriya and delving into Ravana’s lore, it was time for a change of pace. Our compass now pointed towards the serene, emerald waters of Thailand, specifically Koh Chang, an island renowned for its natural beauty and more laid-back atmosphere.
Our arrival began at the bustling Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, a modern hub that felt like a stark contrast to the ancient ruins we’d left behind. From there, we embarked on the significant journey to Koh Chang. It wasn’t a quick hop; the travel involved a combination of land and sea, weaving through the Thai landscape before reaching the ferry. The anticipation built with every passing kilometer, swapping cityscapes for the increasingly rural and tropical scenery.
Finally, the ferry ride itself was a calming transition. The expanse of the Gulf of Thailand stretched out, its waters sparkling, and in the distance, the outline of Koh Chang began to emerge. True to its name, “Elephant Island,” the silhouette of the island, with its mountainous, jungle-clad interior, truly resembled the gentle giant.
Stepping onto the island, we were immediately enveloped by a distinct atmosphere. Unlike some of Thailand’s more developed party islands, Koh Chang exuded a more peaceful and untamed vibe. The air was thick with the scent of tropical foliage, and the dominant sounds were the rustle of leaves and the distant lapping of waves. The main roads, though paved, wound through dense jungle, occasionally revealing glimpses of the pristine coastline.
Our first impression was one of genuine relaxation. The island felt spacious, with ample untouched wilderness complementing the stretches of inviting beaches. It was a perfect antidote to the intense sightseeing of the previous weeks – a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and simply exist amidst stunning natural beauty. Koh Chang welcomed us with its quiet charm, promising days filled with the gentle rhythm of island life, where the biggest adventure might just be finding the perfect hammock or discovering a hidden waterfall.
